If you’ve been following AKA on Twitter for the last few years, you’ll notice that he’s never usually happy with his placement on MTV Base’s Hottest MCs lists. Until this week, where he was named as the 4th greatest rapper in South African history. More on that in a bit.
Let’s go back in time. Not too far, just a year, to the day when the 2017 edition of MTV Base Hottest MCs aired on television and Bhova found himself sitting in fifth place. At the time he reacted angrily when he said: “I don't want MTV to put me on that f**king list. Don't put me on your f**king list no more."
Fast forward to 2018 and here’s how AKA reacted to finishing behind one of the few rappers he respects and gets along with (Kwesta):
Basically, the general consensus is that when AKA doesn’t make the list, then he dismisses its importance as a form of hip hop commentary. However, all of that changed during a special edition version of the Hottest MCs which aired this week - The GOAT (Greatest of All Time) MCs. The list was debated upon by some of hip hop’s most eager personalities who eventually settled on the following order:
And, as you can see, AKA was ranked higher than many of his post-2010 peers. And, in the wise words of ZAlebs editor, Siya Ben, “Sizolala phandle” because AKA is not going to let us live this down:
