Nigeria’s largest grassroots football competition has reached its decisive stage, with the fourth 1xCup edition down to four title contenders and individual honours still open. As the semifinalists prepare for the closing matches, several players have emerged as leading candidates for the Golden Boot, MVP and Golden Glove awards, while also drawing interest from professional clubs.
Golden Boot contest remains open
Ezeji Ikenna of Ighalo FC is currently the front-runner for the 1xCup 2026 Golden Boot, which carries a ₦300,000 prize. The striker has scored nine times and delivered two assists across seven appearances.
Although Ighalo FC has been knocked out of the competition, Ikenna remains first in the scoring table and is well placed to end the tournament as its most prolific player.
His principal challenger for much of the tournament was Emeka Sylvester of Ajuwa FA. Sylvester registered seven goals and three assists in five games and collected the MVP award on three occasions. Ajuwa FA’s round-of-16 exit, however, means he can no longer add to his tally and cannot surpass Ikenna.
Lawal Muiz of Young Strikers FC and Obiora Sunny of Collins Edwin SC remain capable of taking the award. Each has scored six goals and is guaranteed at least two more fixtures: a semifinal followed by either the final or the third-place playoff. Those matches give both forwards an opportunity to move beyond Ikenna’s total.
MVP race will be settled in the final rounds
The outcome of the 1xCup 2026 MVP award, also worth ₦300,000, is expected to depend heavily on performances in the remaining matches. Obiora Sunny has already established himself among the strongest contenders.
The Collins Edwin SC attacker has produced six goals and five assists, putting him in a position to potentially lead both the scoring and assist rankings when the tournament ends.
Emeka Sylvester and Hafiz Odunayo of Elite Stars FC could also remain competitive based on their combined goal and assist output. They share the highest number of MVP awards so far, having each received the honour three times.
Defensive strength is also likely to influence the MVP discussion. Collins Edwin SC, known as the Gladiators, have conceded only three goals in seven matches, the best record in the competition. The side did not allow a goal during the group phase.
Defender Ejiofor Morgan has been central to that defensive unit. Should Collins Edwin SC extend its run successfully through the final stages, he could join the shortlist for the tournament’s MVP recognition.
Golden Glove competition
The race for the best goalkeeper award, which includes a ₦250,000 cash prize, is still unresolved. Ebitu Michael of Newhope Naija FC leads the standings with four clean sheets.
Chidera Maduka of Collins Edwin SC is close behind. With two matches still available to him and the Gladiators’ strong defensive record, Maduka has a significant opportunity to overtake Michael in the clean-sheet rankings.
Pathway to professional football
The 1xCup 2026 is serving not only as a tournament but also as a platform for emerging players seeking professional opportunities. Scouts have been monitoring the standout performers from this fourth edition, creating potential career openings for its leading talents.
Players who excelled in earlier 1xCup tournaments now compete for clubs across Africa, Europe and Asia. Some former participants have also progressed to Nigeria’s national team.
The final phase of the country’s biggest grassroots football tournament will determine its champions and individual award winners while offering another chance for new football prospects to make their mark.
