China’s Foreign Ministry has backed the decision by several leading Chinese consumer brands to cut ties with Kylian Mbappé after remarks by the French footballer sparked anger online.
- Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun set out Beijing’s stance on Tuesday after a video of Mbappé discussing an internet meme spread across social media.
- “Words or conduct that offend the sentiments of the Chinese people will inevitably face rejection from all sectors in China,” Guo said.
- During an appearance on a French talk programme, Mbappé was asked to name his favourite meme involving himself. He referred to a video created by another person featuring “a guy” whom he believed was “a Chinese dictator.”
- The disputed clip used an edited image of Mbappé’s face on the body of Mao Zedong, the founder of Communist China.
- Mengniu, the dairy producer, drinks company Dongpeng and cheese manufacturer Milkground subsequently ended their endorsement contracts with the Real Madrid forward.
- Mbappé issued an apology on Tuesday, saying he recognised that his “ill-judged” remarks had caused hurt in China and among Chinese communities internationally.
“I apologise to everyone my words have upset. This was absolutely not my intention,” Mbappé said. “I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry.”
