Bendel Insurance End Rivers United’s Unbeaten NPFL Start

Rivers United recorded their first Nigeria Premier Football League defeat of the season after losing 2-1 to Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Sunday. Despite the setback, Finidi George’s team remained at the summit of the standings.

Bendel Insurance moved ahead three minutes after the interval when Freeman Wuchirwe found the net. Rivers United drew level 17 minutes before full time through Chijioke Mbaoma, but Jonathan James struck in added time to hand the home side all three points.

At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, Ikorodu City overturned a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Shooting Stars. Shooting Stars had established a 2-0 advantage through Taofeek Otaniyi and Desmond Ojietefian, before Donald Obiajulu scored twice for the hosts to secure a point.

Four-time league winners Kano Pillars responded to last weekend’s disappointing loss against Plateau United by claiming a hard-earned goalless draw away to Warri Wolves in Ozoro.

  • Bendel Insurance 2-1 Rivers United
  • Barau 1-1 Kwara United
  • Abia Warriors 0-1 Niger Tornadoes
  • Ikorodu City 2-2 Shooting Stars
  • Kun Khalifat 1-0 Inter Lagos
