Emergency responders were deployed on Sunday afternoon after a business jet crashed in Greenacres, a municipality in Palm Beach County, Florida.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said the crash site was near Military Trail, in the stretch between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North.
Military Trail has been shut in both directions, northbound and southbound, until authorities provide further notice. Drivers have been urged to stay away from the area and use other routes.
Footage posted online appeared to show the aircraft making an abrupt turn before plunging into the ground close to a mobile-home community. One trailer was destroyed as the impact triggered a large fireball.
Flight information from ADS-B Exchange indicated that the jet lost about 27,000 feet of altitude within roughly one minute before its tracking signal ended.
Authorities have received reports of “several fatalities,” though no confirmed death toll has been released. It also remained unclear whether people on the ground were killed or hurt.
The aircraft was identified as a Learjet 60 that had left Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The Bombardier Aerospace-built Learjet 60 is a corporate aircraft generally fitted for six or seven passengers, in addition to a two-member flight crew.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct the investigation into the crash, the FAA said.
