Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has backed Diogo Dalot after the side’s 4-4 Premier League draw against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, despite the Portuguese defender being blamed for the first two goals conceded by the home team.
Dalot, who has endured a difficult season, was subjected to criticism from supporters both inside the stadium and on social media following the match. Carrick nevertheless highlighted the defender’s work rate, adaptability and commitment to the squad.
“I like Dalot and what he adds to the team,” Carrick said. “Diogo gives everything. He can play in several roles, including at left-back, and he cares enormously. He is putting everything into it. I value what he contributes to the side and the group.”
