Flutterwave Wins Euromoney Award for African Payments Infrastructure

Flutterwave has won the Africa’s Best Payments Infrastructure Provider title at the Euromoney Transaction Banking Awards 2026, recognising its efforts to improve the continent’s payment rails and support cross-border commerce as it reaches its 10th anniversary.

Key takeaways

  • Flutterwave was honoured as Africa’s Best Payments Infrastructure Provider at the 2026 Euromoney Transaction Banking Awards.
  • Since launching in 2016, the company has processed more than one billion transactions valued at over US$50 billion.
  • Its platform is used by about four million people and businesses, ranging from small companies to multinational organisations.
  • Flutterwave is broadening its offering through open banking, microfinance banking, multicurrency services and stablecoin-based settlement tools.
  • Investments from Ripple and Circle support the company’s push into digital-asset infrastructure for international payments.

Payments platform marks a decade of growth

The award underscores Flutterwave’s position in developing payment infrastructure that enables companies to trade across African borders and engage more fully in global markets. The Euromoney Transaction Banking Awards, run by the international financial publication with more than five decades of experience, recognise achievements in transaction banking and payments worldwide.

The distinction comes as Flutterwave celebrates 10 years of operations. The company has focused on making payments easier, linking markets, expanding financial ecosystems and helping companies grow in Africa and internationally.

Founded in 2016, Flutterwave set out to address the complexity of transferring funds among Africa’s varied financial systems. Its platform combines domestic payment options, banking connections and global payment networks, allowing businesses to receive money, attract customers and enter additional markets from a single system.

Over its first decade, the fintech group has become a platform used by roughly four million consumers and businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises as well as large international companies. It has handled more than one billion payments with a combined value exceeding US$50 billion, illustrating both its operating scale and demand for dependable, interconnected financial systems across Africa.

Olugbenga “GB” Agboola, Flutterwave’s founder and chief executive, said the recognition was an important milestone for the company, particularly during its 10th-anniversary year. He said Flutterwave was established in 2016 to make it easier for African companies to move funds and join the global economy.

“A decade later, we have created infrastructure serving millions of businesses and linking African markets with the wider world,” Agboola said. “This award reflects the commitment of our people, the confidence of our customers and the partnerships that have enabled our expansion. It also confirms the purpose that drove us from the beginning.”

He said substantial work remains to make payments around Africa easier, quicker and available to more users. Flutterwave is therefore moving beyond its core payments business to develop broader financial infrastructure encompassing payments, banking, stablecoin capabilities and other services aimed at helping businesses and individuals transfer, manage and obtain money more effectively.

Expansion into banking, data and digital assets

Earlier in 2026, CNBC and Statista included Flutterwave among the world’s 250 leading fintech companies. Agboola was also named among Fintech Magazine’s Top 100 Fintech Leaders, adding to recognition of both the company’s payments operations and its leadership.

Entering its second decade, Flutterwave is seeking to give customers more ways to use and manage their money. Its purchase of open-banking company Mono and its acquisition of a Nigerian Microfinance Banking Licence are key elements of that strategy, bringing payment services, banking products and financial-data functions closer together within one ecosystem.

The company is also developing payment and settlement systems powered by stablecoins. Strategic backing from Ripple and Circle strengthens its plans in digital-asset infrastructure, with the technology intended to make cross-border transfers and settlement more efficient alongside the conventional payment networks used by businesses.

At the same time, Flutterwave is increasing its multicurrency capabilities, enabling businesses to oversee overseas collections and payments while serving customers in multiple markets.

Through its expanding range of financial products, Flutterwave aims to create a more integrated platform through which companies can accept payments, use banking services, manage funds in different currencies and send money across borders with greater flexibility.

For its next stage of development, the company plans to combine payments, banking, multicurrency tools and stablecoin-based infrastructure to help businesses expand within Africa and across the global economy.
