Ikeja Electric Faces Backlash Over Band A-Only Outage Apology

Ikeja Electric Distribution Company has apologised to customers across its Lagos service territory after several days of electricity interruptions, but the statement has drawn criticism from consumers outside its premium Band A category.

Service shortfall for Band A users

  1. Ikeja Electric issued a notice on its X account directed specifically at Band A customers, who are meant to receive at least 20 hours of power each day.
  2. The distributor said it had not met that minimum supply requirement on affected Band A feeders on November 4 and 5, 2026.
  3. “Dear Esteemed Customer, we apologise for falling short of the expected minimum service level of 20 hours on the Band A feeders below for November 4th and 5th, 2026,” the company said.

Customers protest focus on premium tariff band

The apology triggered a backlash on X, where users said the company appeared to be addressing only Band A subscribers while failing to explain service conditions for other customer categories.

  • CFC Adeshinor said the company was not properly carrying out its responsibilities, accusing it of repeatedly disregarding customers outside Band A. “These people constantly mock their customers and ignore everyone but Band A users. No apology and explanation. Are they providing service to just Band A users?” the user said.
  • Damilola Adenusi also questioned the emphasis on Band A customers, asking whether consumers in Bands B, C, D and E, as well as unclassified users, had become irrelevant. “This is not good at all,” the user wrote.
  • Another user, GreatEki, reacted angrily to the selective apology, saying only Band A consumers appeared to be viewed as deserving a response from the distributor.

Gas constraints affecting national supply

The Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, has attributed the decline in electricity generation and supply across the country to shortages in gas availability.

Power Minister Joseph Tegbe has also acknowledged the supply challenge and offered an apology to electricity customers nationwide.
