Kano State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori has handed out cheques totalling ₦7.57 million to 17 families of police personnel who were killed while on duty.
The Kano State Police Command said the payments were made on Monday at its headquarters in Bompai, Kano, through the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance Scheme.
A combined ₦7,573,231.83 was paid to 17 beneficiaries, comprising relatives and next-of-kin of officers who died in active service under the insurance programme.
Bakori delivered the cheques on behalf of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, saying the scheme demonstrated that the force would continue to recognise the service and sacrifice of officers who lost their lives.
“We remain committed to the welfare of our serving officers, retired personnel and the families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty,” Bakori said.
He urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly and encouraged them to maintain contact with the colleagues and friends of their deceased relatives. “Every soul shall taste death,” he said, adding that the death of an officer should not bring an end to the relationships their families had built with fellow personnel.
Bakori said his office remained available to assist beneficiaries where necessary. He also said the command would keep welfare issues central to its operations, including the timely handling and payment of benefits owed to personnel killed or injured during service.
Additional support programmes are being prepared for the families of fallen officers, he added.
