Lagos State Police Command has placed four officers in detention after a video circulating online showed them allegedly harassing a young man in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, and has dissolved the tactical unit to which they were assigned.
Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi said on Friday that an investigation into the footage established that the officers belonged to the Imota/Immortal Tactical Team operating in Ikorodu.
Adebisi said the officers were ordered to appear before the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, on Thursday, when the decision was made to hold them in custody.
“The decision was that the officers should be detained at once while disciplinary procedures are underway. The entire team will also be disbanded,” she said.
All four officers are being held and will be subjected to disciplinary measures, the spokesperson said. Three were displayed at the police command headquarters in Ikeja, while the fourth was also detained but was not presented to the public.
“They are currently at the headquarters for additional investigation, and I assure the public that suitable action will be taken against them,” Adebisi said.
She added that the commissioner had cautioned officers that the command would not accept misconduct or abuse of authority, and that personnel must carry out their responsibilities with honesty and humility.
The police command thanked the local community for its help in rapidly identifying the officers and called on residents to keep reporting cases of police misconduct.
