Lawyer Criticises Shettima’s Campaign Celebrations Amid Nigeria’s Hardship

Kano-based human rights lawyer Abba Hikima has criticised Vice President Kashim Shettima for dancing and celebrating at All Progressives Congress campaign events, arguing that the displays are inappropriate while Nigerians face deep economic pressures and worsening insecurity.

Key takeaways

  • Hikima urged the Vice President’s advisers to discourage what he termed public displays of celebration at campaign rallies.
  • The lawyer said leaders should not celebrate when they have failed to protect citizens’ lives.
  • He cited financial hardship, kidnappings, killings and broader security threats affecting millions of Nigerians.
  • Hikima said political office demands empathy and awareness of the country’s public mood.

Call for greater sensitivity

In a post published on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Hikima said Shettima’s aides should advise him to end what he described as “embarrassing public dancing and celebratory displays at campaign rallies.”

He said no accountable Nigerian political leader should be visibly dancing or celebrating after being unable to ensure the safety of the population they had pledged to defend.

Hikima argued that the Vice President’s conduct appeared detached from the daily realities confronting ordinary people, especially at a time of major economic strain and security concerns across the country.

Economic hardship and security risks

“As he dances, millions of Nigerians are struggling to survive amid economic hardship, rising insecurity, kidnappings and killings,” Hikima said.

He added that current conditions do not warrant public festivities by political leaders who do not adequately acknowledge the hardship endured by citizens.

“This is hardly a time for our leaders to be seen indulging in public celebrations without due regard for the grim realities confronting ordinary citizens,” he said.

Hikima said effective political leadership requires sensitivity, empathy and a clear understanding of national sentiment, alongside concern for the public’s welfare and safety.
