Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho taunted Racing Santander supporters after his side’s 3-0 LaLiga victory on Sunday, criticising the home crowd’s understanding of football’s rules.
Mourinho said he admired both the stadium and Racing’s fans for their active role during matches, while using their reaction to refereeing decisions as the basis for a pointed remark.
Quick facts
- Real Madrid defeated Racing Santander 3-0 in LaLiga on Sunday.
- Jose Mourinho praised the intensity of the home support but questioned fans’ knowledge of the laws.
- Racing believed they had been awarded a penalty before VAR reversed the decision.
- The overturned call prompted an angry response from local supporters.
“I love this stadium and I love the Racing fans,” Mourinho said. “They do not come here for entertainment or to watch a film; they come to take part in the game and make life very hard for the opposition.”
He added that the crowd objected to virtually every refereeing call, particularly because they did not understand the regulations well. Mourinho said that was understandable, given how frequently the rules change.
Atmosphere inside the ground became especially heated when Racing Santander appeared to have been handed an opportunity to revive the contest from the penalty spot.
VAR later reviewed the incident and the initial decision was cancelled, triggering fury among the home fans.
