MRS stations supported by Dangote Refinery, along with other Nigerian petrol retailers, have raised pump prices for Premium Motor Spirit, commonly called petrol. A Sunday market check found that outlets in Abuja and surrounding areas were selling petrol for N1,409 per litre, up from N1,370.
The adjustment represents a N39-per-litre increase at MRS stations during the weekend. The revised rate was observed at MRS locations in Kubwa, Katampe, Gwarimpa and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
Ranoil and AA Rano also lifted their prices, adding N10 per litre to bring their retail rate to N1,410 from N1,400 across their networks.
The increases followed a proposal by Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele for a discounted petrol price of N1,350 per litre at filling stations operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, or NNPCL.
Fuel dealers and marketers have called on the Federal Government to apply the proposed discount beyond NNPCL outlets, extending it to other retail stations nationwide.
Petrol prices had been declining during the preceding week before the latest increases. Brent crude was trading at $104 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude stood at $91 per barrel.
