Naira Strengthens to N1,315.67 per Dollar in Biggest September Gain

The naira posted its strongest advance of September on Thursday, extending its recent recovery against the US dollar in Nigeria’s official foreign-exchange market.

Naira strengthens at official market

Figures from the Central Bank of Nigeria showed the currency closing at N1,315.67 to the dollar, compared with N1,326.69 on Wednesday. The move represented an N11 improvement in the naira’s daily value.

  • Thursday’s official rate: N1,315.67 per dollar
  • Wednesday’s official rate: N1,326.69 per dollar
  • Daily gain: N11 against the dollar

Parallel-market rate holds steady

The naira’s price was unchanged in the parallel market, where it traded at N1,400 per dollar on Thursday. That was the same level recorded on the previous day, leaving a gap between the unofficial and official rates.

Foreign reserves continue to rise

The latest currency movement came as Nigeria’s external reserves climbed to $53.99 billion by September 2, 2026. Central bank figures showed the further increase in the country’s dollar holdings.

The naira had also gained against the dollar on September 1 and September 2, 2026, making Thursday’s advance the third consecutive daily improvement reported in September.
