Gary Neville sharply criticised Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes for what he viewed as an exaggerated reaction during the Gunners’ Premier League win over Liverpool at Anfield.
Early flashpoint
- In the opening stages, Gabriel went down after a challenge involving Liverpool striker Alexander Isak and appeared to signal to referee Andy Madley that he had been struck in the face.
- Replays showed Isak’s arm connecting with the Brazilian centre-back’s upper chest rather than his face.
- Gabriel nevertheless held his face while on the ground, prompting strong criticism from Neville during his Sky Sports commentary.
Neville’s criticism
The former Manchester United and England defender said Gabriel’s approach in such incidents undermined the qualities that otherwise make him a formidable competitor.
“He sometimes lets himself down,” Neville said. “I like his intensity, passion and determination. But there is a push into his upper chest and he goes down holding his face.
“It is absolutely embarrassing. He has to stop doing that.”
Arsenal take the points
- Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute.
- His strike proved enough to secure a 1-0 Arsenal victory at Anfield.
- The result reinforced Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League, with the reigning champions moving three points clear of their nearest rivals.
