Nigeria’s main labour federation has set October 27, 2026, as the deadline for the Federal Government to address workers’ demands, warning that failure to do so could trigger a nationwide stoppage affecting economic activity.
Deadline and mobilisation plans
- The Nigeria Labour Congress said its Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah, issued the warning on Thursday after a meeting with the Minister of Labour.
- The union is seeking lower petrol prices, which it said have reached as much as N1,429 per litre, alongside an increase in the national minimum wage beyond the current N70,000 level.
- The NLC instructed its affiliated unions, state councils and civil-society partners to begin preparations for possible nationwide industrial action starting on October 27.
- Labour leaders said the meeting with the government did not produce firm commitments, leaving the union’s outstanding demands unresolved.
“The Nigeria Labour Congress has given the Federal Government until October 27 to resolve workers’ demands, failing which there will be a nationwide strike,” Upah said.
