Nigerian Lawmakers Demand FERMA Complete Kirikiri Road Repairs

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has pressed the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to swiftly finish rehabilitation work on Kirikiri Federal Road in Lagos State’s Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency, citing prolonged disruption to travel, trade and goods movement caused by the route’s poor condition.

Lawmakers seek priority work on outstanding sections

The House asked FERMA to give immediate priority to the Berger-Suya corridor and restart work on other stretches in Ajeromi-Ifelodun that were not covered during earlier repair programmes.

The directive arose from a motion moved by Hon. Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul, who questioned why the road scheme remained unfinished despite a previous instruction from the chamber.

Members recalled that the House, on October 3, 2023, approved Resolution HR. 192/10/2023 after debating a motion entitled “The Need to Rehabilitate the Kirikiri Federal Road in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State.” That decision called for urgent action to remedy the declining condition of the federal route.

Earlier intervention left Ajeromi-Ifelodun untreated

Although FERMA subsequently carried out substantial rehabilitation on the Amuwo portion of the road, lawmakers said the segment running through Ajeromi-Ifelodun did not receive any work.

The unfinished project has continued to create operational and economic burdens for several groups:

  • Residents facing difficult daily journeys;
  • Commuters dealing with unreliable road access;
  • Commercial transport operators affected by slower and more costly trips; and
  • Businesses moving goods through the area.

Lawmakers said the intended outcome of the 2023 resolution has therefore not been delivered, making a further parliamentary intervention necessary to secure attention for the remaining sections.

FERMA ordered to inspect, correct and complete the route

The House instructed FERMA to assess the full Kirikiri Federal Road, placing particular emphasis on the Berger-Suya axis. The review is also to examine the quality of work completed on sections that have already been rehabilitated.

  • FERMA is to identify any parts of the road where repairs were defective or below standard.
  • The agency must carry out corrective work in line with approved engineering requirements.
  • It is to return to the specified road corridors in Ajeromi-Ifelodun and speed up work on every outstanding segment.
  • The objective is to bring the entire rehabilitation project to completion.

Members stressed that FERMA must deliver the goals set out in the 2023 resolution and establish a lasting remedy for the road’s continued deterioration.

Committees assigned to track implementation

To ensure the directive is carried out, the House assigned its Committees on Works and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to supervise implementation of the resolution.
