
Nigerian equities ended the week under heavy pressure, with investors losing about N3.8 trillion over four sessions. The decline followed a meeting between Nigerian Exchange Group executives and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

NGX figures showed that the market declined on each trading day from Tuesday to Friday. Losses totalled N2.932 trillion across Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by N613 billion on Thursday and a further N257 billion on Friday.
On Friday, total market capitalisation slipped 0.16% to N156.623 trillion from N156.880 trillion at the prior close. The benchmark All-Share Index also lost 398.18 points, or 0.16%, ending at 242,619.20 points versus Thursday’s 243,017.38.
Fresh selling hit Fortis Global Insurance, Omatek Ventures, John Holt, RT Briscoe and Dangote Sugar, as well as 25 other stocks that closed lower. Fortis Global Insurance was the weakest performer, falling 9.31%.
International Energy Insurance topped the gainers, rising 9.92% to N5.32. Market activity nevertheless weakened sharply, with volume falling 66.64% to 1.41 billion shares worth N45.31 billion in 39,134 transactions.
Fortis Global Insurance generated the largest volume, with 874.08 million shares changing hands, equal to 61.83% of the day’s total. MTN Nigeria led turnover by value at N31.37 billion, representing 69.24% of all Friday trading value.
On August 6, 2026, the Nigerian Exchange Group’s board and management visited President Tinubu. The delegation was headed by Chairman Dr Umaru Kwairanga and Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Temi Popoola.
Tinubu praised the exchange’s reform programme and said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited would be listed on the country’s stock market.
