Nigeria’s Top Political, Economic and Security Developments

Nigeria’s political, economic and security agenda on Monday featured fresh disputes over living costs, preparations for the 2027 elections, labour tensions, public-health developments and enforcement actions targeting illegal mineral processing.

Political parties contest hardship narrative ahead of 2027

  • A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike rejected claims by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the governing All Progressives Congress that opposition parties are to blame for the country’s economic difficulties. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the faction’s national publicity secretary, said on Monday that the opposition, and the PDP in particular, cannot be held responsible for the hardship facing Nigerians.
  • The Nigeria Democratic Congress has opened its newly purchased national secretariat in Abuja, strengthening its organisational base as it prepares for the 2027 general election. The premises will function as the party’s administrative hub and as headquarters for its presidential campaign.
  • The African Democratic Congress criticised the APC over reports that it distributed seven luxury SUVs, valued at roughly N1 billion, to youth leaders. The ADC said the reported allocation showed a conflict between the economic sacrifices being demanded of citizens and the benefits available to members of the ruling party, accusing the APC of favouring political mobilisation while Nigerians endure financial pressure.
  • Phrank Shaibu, director of strategic communication for the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, said former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar plans to campaign across all 36 states before the 2027 presidential vote. He contrasted that approach with Tinubu’s plan to personally attend APC campaign rallies in only 12 states, a decision the president linked to the need to combine campaign activity with governing responsibilities.

Health, labour and electoral administration

  • Health Minister Ali Pate said Nigeria’s imported Ebola virus disease index patient has been transferred to Switzerland for additional treatment. The patient left Abuja earlier on Monday with Pate’s authorisation, accompanied by her spouse, who has shown no symptoms. Her clinical condition had improved substantially before the evacuation, the minister said.
  • Organised labour is expected to determine its next move after a key meeting with the Federal Government on Tuesday. The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress are seeking firm government proposals on petrol prices, wage talks and other unresolved worker-welfare matters, while the prospect of a nationwide strike remains in view.
  • The Independent National Electoral Commission will place the preliminary voter register for the 2027 general elections online after concerns were raised by citizens and other interested groups about access to the document. The register had previously been displayed in person at registration locations nationwide from October 9 through October 15.

Court case, anti-graft raid and security operations

  • A Federal High Court in Abuja set November 25 for former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai to begin his defence in a case involving allegations of unlawful telephone interception. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the date on Monday after rejecting El-Rufai’s no-case application, finding that prosecutors had produced enough evidence for him to answer the charges.
  • Officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 arrested 14 Chinese nationals and one Nigerian during raids on four illegal lithium-processing facilities in Ogere, Ogun State. The commission said on Monday that its operatives uncovered the plants during the operation.
  • Joint Task Force North-West troops under Operation Fansan Yamma killed eight suspected terrorists and freed three kidnapping victims in coordinated missions across Katsina, Kaduna and Zamfara states. The operations took place between Saturday and Sunday.

Items recovered during North-West missions

  • One AK-47 rifle
  • Three locally made firearms
  • Three motorcycles
  • Cutlasses and assorted charms
