Nigeria’s state-owned fuel retailer has lifted the price of petrol in Abuja even as crude benchmarks weakened and Dangote Refinery expanded a programme offering free delivery of the product to selected destinations.
NNPCL raises Abuja pump price
Prices checked across Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) stations in Abuja and nearby areas on Tuesday, which was a public holiday for Eid-ul-Mawlid, showed petrol selling for N1,270 per litre. The previous price was N1,250, representing an increase of N20 per litre at the government-controlled outlets.
The adjustment came despite Dangote Refinery’s decision to broaden its free petrol distribution initiative to 10 locations across Nigeria, including Abuja. The refinery’s petrol was priced at N1,185 per litre under the arrangement.
Price gap widens among retailers
MRS filling stations had also increased their petrol price by N20, taking it to N1,230 per litre. Following the latest changes, NNPCL’s rate in Abuja was N15 to N40 per litre above prices charged by MRS, Geregu, Ranoil, Emedab, Mobil and several other retailers in the capital and surrounding communities.
- NNPCL outlets: N1,270 per litre.
- MRS stations: N1,230 per litre after a N20 increase.
- Empire and AA Rano: between N1,275 and N1,299 per litre.
- Other retailers in Abuja and nearby areas: prices varied within the broader market range.
Empire and AA Rano were selling above the NNPCL rate, with prices ranging from N1,275 to N1,299 per litre. Overall, motorists in Abuja and its environs were paying between N1,230 and N1,299 per litre for petrol.
Crude prices move lower
The petrol price changes occurred while international oil markets were under pressure. At the time of the price assessment, Brent crude had fallen to $88.80 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was trading at $81.86 per barrel.
