Accord Party governorship candidate in Taraba State, Professor Jerome Nyameh, has urged security authorities and the state government to respond swiftly to deadly violence in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, where attacks on Binnari village and nearby communities reportedly killed dozens of people and injured several others.
Key takeaways
- Nyameh called for stronger security operations to safeguard exposed communities and identify those behind the killings.
- The violence reportedly caused fatalities, injuries, property losses and severe hardship for residents in the affected area.
- He asked Governor Agbu Kefas to visit the communities, meet bereaved families and arrange emergency assistance.
- The candidate said security protection must extend beyond the Taraba State capital, Jalingo.
- He urged coordinated action by public officials, local leaders, security services and other stakeholders.
Call for emergency intervention
In a statement issued on Monday in Jalingo, Nyameh described the attacks as deeply distressing and unfortunate, citing the deaths, injuries, destruction of homes and other property, and the suffering endured by local residents.
He appealed to the Taraba State Government to take immediate action following the reported attacks on Binnari and other settlements in Karim-Lamido. Nyameh specifically asked Governor Kefas to travel to the affected locations to offer condolences to grieving families, evaluate the scale of the damage and ensure that relief supplies and other support reach victims without delay.
The Accord Party candidate also pressed security agencies to step up their presence and operations in the area, arrest those responsible for the attacks and ensure that suspects face legal consequences.
Need for durable security measures
Nyameh said the state needed practical, long-term security arrangements capable of preventing further violence and rebuilding public confidence in Karim-Lamido as well as other at-risk communities across Taraba.
“The security challenges confronting residents of Karim-Lamido and other parts of Taraba require urgent attention. The protection of lives and property should not be concentrated in the state capital, Jalingo,” he said.
He added that Karim-Lamido and Taraba State as a whole were entitled to peace, stressing that the value of a person’s life should not depend on where that person lives.
Nyameh argued that genuine and lasting stability would exist only when people in Binnari, Karim-Lamido and communities throughout the state could carry out everyday activities without living in fear of further attacks.
He called on government representatives, traditional and community leaders, security institutions and other relevant parties to collaborate in tackling Taraba’s security problems. He warned that communities affected by violence should not be left to deal with its consequences without sufficient official support, saying a prompt and coordinated response was required to protect residents and avert additional loss of life.
