Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, arguing that the country requires a more energetic and capable administration to address its mounting challenges.
Speaking on Monday at the NDC presidential campaign council meeting in Kaduna, Obi said Tinubu’s present level of energy was inadequate for governing Nigeria and accused the president of steering the country into a crisis in which “everything is collapsing.”
Obi said his interactions across the country showed that Nigerians were seeking a change in leadership. He pledged to provide what he described as a new direction for the country.
“Tinubu has taken this country into crisis, and today everything is falling apart,” Obi said. “From my engagements across Nigeria, Nigerians want new leadership, and we assure you that I will deliver that new leadership.”
He said the current administration lacked the competence, capacity, compassion and commitment needed to confront Nigeria’s problems. Obi also argued that Tinubu did not possess the determination and stamina required by the office at a time of deep economic and security pressures.
“Nigeria cannot be governed with the energy he has today,” Obi said, adding that the country needed a president who was consistently available and prepared to respond directly to emergencies.
Using insecurity as an example, Obi said a president should travel to Jos if a crisis occurred there. He also said his administration would not remain passive if hundreds of people were abducted and taken into the bush, declaring that the government would pursue the kidnappers into their hideouts.
