Ogun State police have arrested a man accused of killing a 61-year-old retired teacher at her home in Abeokuta, eight months after she was found dead in her toilet. Investigators said the suspect was traced through the victim’s mobile phone after the case was moved to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran.
Quick facts
- Victim: Mrs Adedotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, widely known as Mama Teacher.
- Location: Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
- Alleged killing: Friday, February 27, 2026.
- Body discovered: February 28, in the toilet at her residence.
- Suspect arrested: Saburi Lateef Ayinde, also called “OKI-OCEAN,” on October 19.
- Police said a financial disagreement involving ₦3.45 million preceded the alleged attack.
Oluwaseun had returned from a retirement celebration arranged by her former colleagues a day before the alleged killing. Her body was discovered the following day inside the toilet of her home.
The initial investigation was handled in Bode-Olude before being transferred to the SCID homicide unit. The transfer and continued inquiries resulted in the arrest of Ayinde, whom police describe as the main suspect.
Account of the alleged dispute
In a video confession, Ayinde said the dispute arose from money he claimed to have left with the retired teacher for safekeeping. He alleged that he had deposited ₦3.45 million with her and that she had agreed to add ₦1.55 million as a loan, bringing the intended sum to ₦5 million for the purchase of a vehicle.
He said he visited her home at about 6 p.m. on February 27 to again ask about the money. “I had been asking her about it repeatedly,” he said, adding that she had continued to delay the matter.
Ayinde said he requested the return of his own funds if she no longer intended to provide the additional loan. He claimed that Oluwaseun told him she would raise an alarm and ordered him to leave the apartment.
He said she went into the toilet and that he followed her there. The suspect alleged that he picked up a cutlass lying on the ground and again demanded his money.
“As she was about coming out, I pulled her back and cut her with the cutlass,” he said. He claimed he struck her on the neck, hand and legs before she fell, and said he then placed her on the toilet seat.
The suspect said a neighbour was outside and that he remained at the property for some time because he did not want to be seen leaving. He said the victim was still attempting to speak while he went to sit in the living room.
“I was regretting what I had done,” he said. “I am not happy that I killed her. I did not tell anybody what happened, but I felt bad about it every day.”
Ayinde also admitted taking the victim’s phone after discovering that it was not protected by a password.
Phone trail led to arrest
Police spokesman DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi said detectives used the stolen handset to reconstruct events and identify the suspect. “We were able to establish and connect facts because the phone was tracked and it led us to the suspect,” he said.
Babaseyi said Ayinde would be brought before a court after investigators complete their review of the evidence. Ogun Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised the officers involved for what the command described as their persistence and professional conduct.
The police urged Ogun residents to remain alert, be careful about those in whom they place trust and use lawful channels to settle disputes. Residents should not take matters into their own hands, the command said, warning that impatience and anger can lead to irreversible consequences.
