Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has dismissed the idea that Manchester United could drop into the Championship this season, despite the club’s difficult Premier League position.
United are 17th in the standings after nine league games. They are level on points with 18th-placed Crystal Palace, who occupy a relegation position because their goal difference is worse.
“Manchester United face Coventry on December 5, and I would be amazed if they are not among the Premier League’s bottom three by that point,” Merson said. “However, I cannot see them being relegated — definitely not. I am not sure where people think they should be.”
Manchester United ended last season inside the Premier League’s top four under manager Michael Carrick, securing a place in the current UEFA Champions League campaign.
