With fewer than three months remaining before the 2027 presidential vote, Vice President Kashim Shettima has appealed for northern backing for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for another term, saying the administration would continue to advance the region’s interests.
Addressing an audience in Abuja on Monday, Shettima said northerners should not view Tinubu’s possible re-election with concern, arguing that the president has strong regard for the region and remains focused on its development.
“We should unite and support the growth of our region and the advancement of our people by securing the return of this administration,” Shettima said. “The gains are already becoming visible, and there is more this government can deliver in several areas. I assure you that the president cares deeply about the North and will keep working for it.”
The contest is expected to pit Tinubu against Atiku Abubakar, the northern presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, who is regarded as one of the president’s leading rivals in the 2027 race.
Rabiu Kwankwaso, a northern politician and presidential running mate from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, or NDC, is also expected to feature in the election landscape.
