Sokoto State’s House of Assembly has unanimously approved legislation backing the creation of state police forces in Nigeria, adding momentum to efforts to overhaul the country’s security system.
Speaker Tukur Bala Bodinga confirmed the decision on Tuesday after lawmakers adopted the measure during a plenary session. “Yes, we passed the bill today. You will see the statement shortly,” Bodinga told journalists.
The vote comes as pressure grows for changes to Nigeria’s security structure, especially across the North-West, where armed bandit groups and kidnappers continue to endanger residents, disrupt economic activity and damage property.
The proposal is part of the wider constitutional amendment process required to permit state-level policing. The National Assembly had previously transmitted the measure to the country’s state legislatures for their review and approval.
The Sokoto Assembly is expected to release an official statement with further information on its resolution.
