Power supply has been disrupted in parts of Port Harcourt and surrounding areas in Rivers State after a labour-related incident affected transmission infrastructure connected to the Afam IV Power Station, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said.
The outage began on Monday, September 28, 2026, when members of the Rivers State chapter of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) opened the Afam–Alaoji 330kV Transmission Line 2 at the Alaoji 330kV Transmission Substation. TCN said the action arose from an unresolved dispute between NUEE and the management of Afam IV Gas Power Station.
As a result, the 150MVA 330/132kV inter-bus transformer at Afam IV tripped, restricting the bulk transmission of electricity to parts of Port Harcourt and nearby communities. The facilities affected include the Port Harcourt Town 132kV Transmission Substation, the Elelenwo 132kV Transmission Substation and the 60MVA 132/33kV transformer at the Port Harcourt Mains 132kV Transmission Substation.
TCN said it is working with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), to bring the affected equipment back online once conditions permit a safe restoration. The company apologised to consumers for the disruption and said it would issue further updates as the situation evolves.
