President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of a new army battalion and an artillery regiment in Kano State, strengthening the security presence in one of northern Nigeria’s most populous and commercially important regions.
Dr Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, a leader of the All Progressives Congress, said the new deployments were intended to address rising security risks in Kano and surrounding areas. He also praised National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Defence Minister Christopher Musa and Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle for their roles in efforts to improve safety across the state.
New military deployments
- The 24 Battalion has been deployed to Tudun Wada.
- The 311 Artillery Regiment has been stationed in Dambatta.
- The formations are expected to expand the military’s capacity to respond to banditry, terrorism and other forms of violent crime affecting local communities.
Kwankwaso said the additional units had helped strengthen public confidence in the Federal Government’s ability to safeguard people and assets.
“President Tinubu has demonstrated that he cares deeply about the security of Kano and its people. The establishment of these new military formations is a clear demonstration that the Federal Government is prepared to take decisive action to protect lives and property,” he said.
Security and economic importance
He said Kano’s large population and its importance to the Nigerian economy made a responsive and robust security framework essential, particularly as new threats emerge.
The APC figure said the battalion and artillery regiment would complement the security institutions already operating in the state, while reinforcing broader operations against criminal activity.
He added that the Federal Government’s measures reflected a commitment to improving safety in Kano, and said residents would recognise the President’s intervention.
“For all that President Tinubu is doing for Kano, the people of the state will continue to appreciate him. We will reciprocate these gestures through our continued support for his administration and its programmes,” Kwankwaso said.
Call for community cooperation
Kwankwaso urged people in Tudun Wada, Dambatta and other communities to work closely with the military and provide security agencies with actionable information.
He said the effectiveness of the new formations would rely not merely on troop deployments, but also on cooperation and trust between military personnel and the communities they are assigned to protect.
