President Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles after the Republican Party lost the US midterm elections.
- Trump announced the change in a Truth Social post on Friday, 6 November 2026.
- Wiles will move to a new assignment overseeing political activities within what Trump called the “Trump Political Operation.”
- Trump praised Wiles for doing an “outstanding job” in her White House role.
- Miller, a long-serving Trump adviser and a key designer of the administration’s tougher immigration agenda, is due to take up the chief of staff post on Monday, 9 November.
- Wiles is expected to remain involved in Trump’s wider political organisation after leaving the chief of staff position.
Midterm setback
The leadership reshuffle follows the 3 November US midterm vote, in which Democrats took control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate from the Republicans.
Former President Barack Obama characterised the results as a vote against Trump’s leadership. Trump, however, said the election outcome should not be read as a rejection of him by US voters.
