Senator Abdulaziz Yari, director-general of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, has pledged Northern Nigeria’s political backing for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election effort, saying regional leaders, traditional authorities and Islamic clerics are being mobilised behind the president.
Key takeaways
- Yari made the commitment at the launch of the APC presidential campaign in Kaduna.
- President Tinubu and governors from Northern states attended the event.
- The campaign council is seeking support from emirs, Islamic scholars and imams across the region.
- Yari said policy continuity and national stability were central arguments for a second Tinubu term.
- He pointed to fuel-subsidy removal and foreign-exchange reforms as key elements of the administration’s record.
Northern campaign backing
Speaking at the Kaduna campaign opening, Yari said the APC had held consultations with influential Northern figures to build support for Tinubu’s return to office. He said the outreach had included traditional rulers, ulama and imams, with the party stressing the importance of another term for policy continuity, peace and Nigeria’s wider stability.
“We have been engaging all and sundry, our traditional rulers, our ulama and our imams, to understand the importance of your return in 2027 for continuity, for the peace of this country and for Nigeria,” Yari said.
He told the president that prominent political leaders from across the North had assembled for the campaign launch and said he expected the region to vote strongly for Tinubu in the next presidential election.
“We are fully behind you in Northern Nigeria, and by God’s grace, we will demonstrate our support for your re-election on January 16, 2027,” Yari said.
Economic record and regional concerns
Yari characterised Kaduna as Northern Nigeria’s political spiritual centre, arguing that the attendance of governors from throughout the region underlined the strategic importance of the event.
He also commended Tinubu’s government, saying its economic programme had strengthened important indicators since the president took office. Yari highlighted the elimination of the petrol subsidy and reforms to the exchange-rate system as examples of the administration’s policy agenda.
The APC, he said, would campaign on the government’s record as it pursues a renewed mandate in 2027. At the same time, he urged Tinubu to give close attention to issues raised in the North and to ensure fair treatment for the region.
“We urge Mr President to listen carefully to the concerns of Northern Nigeria and ensure that justice is served,” Yari said.
