YEDC Warns Customers Against Fake 20% Electricity Bonus Scam

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) has warned customers about a scam message spreading on social media that claims prepaid meter users can get an extra 20% bonus in electricity units if they recharge through unofficial channels. The company says the posting is not only misleading, but also not connected to its own operations.

Quick facts

  • YEDC says a social media claim about receiving an additional 20% bonus on prepaid recharges is false.
  • The company says it does not provide bonus units via individuals, agents, personal bank accounts, phone numbers, or social media contacts.
  • Customers are told to buy electricity tokens only through approved cashless platforms, including the YEDC Pay App, OPay, Interswitch, and other authorised vending channels.
  • YEDC advises customers to use the nearest YEDC office if they need help.
  • The firm cautions customers not to share meter details or personal information, and not to pay unauthorised people claiming to represent the company.

In a statement released on Monday by the company’s management, YEDC urged customers to ignore the fraudulent information and clarified that it did not originate from the utility. The alert comes as prepaid electricity customers increasingly rely on digital top-up methods, creating opportunities for scammers to exploit confusion and urgency.

YEDC emphasized that bonus electricity is not issued through third parties or informal payment routes. The company specifically warned against approaches involving people or agents, personal bank accounts, phone numbers, or messages relayed through social media accounts.

Instead, the firm directed customers to recharge only through approved cashless payment channels. These include the YEDC Pay App, OPay, Interswitch, and other authorised vending options recognized by the company.

The utility also advised residents not to disclose meter information or other personal data to anyone, and not to transfer money to individuals who claim they can act on YEDC’s behalf. Customers who are unsure about a transaction were told to seek support from the closest YEDC office.

To reduce the risk of fraud, YEDC added that consumers should depend solely on guidance published through its official communication routes. The management thanked customers for their cooperation and reiterated its commitment to continue providing reliable service.
