Former Flying Eagles player Simon Zenke has questioned why Arsenal and Manchester United passed on Victor Osimhen before the Nigerian forward moved from Napoli to Galatasaray, arguing that both Premier League clubs could now be reconsidering that decision.
Galatasaray move followed major-club links
Osimhen joined the Istanbul side after being repeatedly connected with leading European teams, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. The former Lille striker eventually chose Galatasaray and has since become a central figure at Rams Park.
- Osimhen arrived in Turkey from Napoli after speculation about transfers to several major European clubs.
- Arsenal and Manchester United were among the teams linked with the Super Eagles forward.
- Zenke said both English clubs were in need of a recognised striker at the time.
Zenke calls transfer a strategic bargain
Speaking to Türkiye Gazetesi through Habersarikirmizi, Zenke described Galatasaray’s acquisition of Osimhen as an important strategic opening, particularly given the player’s market value when the deal was completed.
“In my view, this was a real opportunity for Galatasaray because his market value was above €100 million, or N152 billion, at that time,” Zenke said.
He added that he was surprised no major European club, particularly Arsenal or Manchester United, made a move for the forward.
“I was genuinely surprised that big European clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United, which needed a striker then, did not pursue him. After watching what he has done in Turkey, I believe they may regret it now,” Zenke said.
Strong output in Istanbul
Since joining Galatasaray, Osimhen has produced 68 goals and 19 assists in 83 competitive appearances, reinforcing his importance to the Turkish club and strengthening the case that the deal represented a missed chance for other European sides.
