We chatted to Chad Le Clos ahead of the annual South African Sports Star of the Year awards which are being held on the 4th of November 2012. Uncover a few little known facts about SA’s golden boy and find out what he really thinks about his fellow nominees…

Who is your sporting hero?

Michael Phelps will always be my hero. I believe that young people should aspire to be like him.

What would you be if you weren’t a sportsman?

Gee, I haven’t given that much thought although I’m pretty sure I would have been involved in some sort of sport. I’ve always loved sport!

This seems pretty obvious, but what’s been your career highlight so far?

It can only be the Olympic win over Phelps!

If your house was burning down, what one item would you save?

My Playstation 3.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Never give up!

My brother always gives me a lucky charm before a big competition.

What’s your favourite pre-race meal?

Steak and pasta.

In a film of your life, who would you want to play you?

Leonardo Di Caprio.

I think I’m an inspiration to young South Africans. I’m just an ordinary boy who never gives up!

Any thoughts you’d like to share on your fellow nominees?

Everyone is so deserving and I just wish everyone the best. I think that it’s going to be tough but may the best person win!
