Reports indicate that TKZee’s concert in Mpumalanga last week was not up to their usual high standards.
Zwai Bala, Kabelo “Bouga Luv” Mabalane and Tokollo “Magesh” Tshabalala – the three members of the group – embarked on solo careers, with mixed success, after the band had ascended to the pinnacle of the local music scene.
The group has attempted a comeback in the last two years, with their last performance being in collaboration with Khuli Chana at a festival in the province.
Critics of the band have questioned whether they still retain the relevance of old, and seemingly their performance in Mbombela did little to quell the doubts.
Speaking to the Sowetan, Zwai argued that despite their fan-base having matured, the band is still in touch with their musical tastes.
“Our music still has a following. The fans we had back then have grown up and we are making music with that in mind. We still get fans getting excited about our old songs when we perform live,” he said.
The band followed a typical pattern (think Mafikizolo, Boom Shaka and Bongo Maffin) when they split, and their comeback album, 2009′s “Coming Home” , failed to reestablish them as one of the nation’s premier musical outfits.
One kwaito musician, who asked to go unnamed, told the Sowetan that ”music is about time.
“Once your fans shift their taste and you take too long to make new music, you are behind with your fans. To come back is worse than to start in the music industry .”
It will be interesting to see if TKZee can prove their critics wrong.
