The Movember Song

November 13th, 2012

Comedy parody group Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues are back with another video hit, this time in celebration of Movember.

The Braaiday and The car guard song masterminds’ latest video is a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe.

Mid-Movember, The Movember Song has already garnered nearly 200 000 views on YouTube.

East Coast Radio’s Abi Ray caught up with Nicholas Smal and Gareth Allison.

How do these parodies come together – is it just because you guys are creative geniuses and it comes to you, or is it seriously hard work?

Nicholas: I think it just comes down to us as friends, we pretty much chat all day long and just joke around, and these things just kind of seem to flow naturally. We’re always having a bit of fun and talking a bit of nonsense, so it’s nothing we have to sit down and think too hard about.

Gareth: Obviously we plan out the lyrics a bit more, but the ideas seem to come pretty naturally.

Why Carly Rae Jepsen, do one of you have a crush on her?

Gareth: Well, Nic is married, so yes – he does have a crush on her.

Nicholas: I’ll be honest…she’s a hottie.

Gareth: No, not for me thanks. She’s not my soul mate, Katie Perry is.

Out of the parody songs you’ve done, which is your favourite?

Nicholas: That’s a tough one. I think I’d have to go with this one … it was a whole lot of fun doing it, I think mainly because we’ve been very proud about facial hair. For a few years now we’ve been celebrating the month of Movember, and just facial hair in general, so I think I’d have to say this one definitely.

Were all the celebrities (Dr. Michael MolSiv Ngesi and Angel Blythe Campey) keen to be involved, right from the start?

Gareth: We’re fighting them off at this stage, we’ve actually got Nathaniel on the other line at the moment – he’s holding. We’re in talks. (laughs) I think we’ve been lucky enough, the more we do, the more people have been keen to be involved – it makes it easier. Michael Mol was such an amazing sport.

Nicholas: At the end of the day it’s not as easy as it seems. We’ve been in communication with a few different guys, and it’s not like everyone says yes straight away. I think though with each video that you do, a bit more credibility gets added so then guys are not so reluctant to agree to jump on board. So we’re enjoying the guys’ willingness at the moment.

The duo say though that it’s not all fun and games: they’re hoping to increase awareness on the real purpose of Movember: educating men and raising awareness about prostate and testicular cancer.
