Music legend Ray “Chikapa” Phiri has been rewarded for his contribution to South African music with a free trip to Australia.
Phiri’s band, Stimela, were recently nominated for four South African Music Awards (SAMAS) and Phiri was awarded the silver Order of Ikhamanga from President Jacob Zuma on Freedom Day.
Gumede is the latest to honour Phiri for his musical feats and struggle against Apartheid by presenting him with an all-expenses-paid trip to Australia for two weeks.
“To be honoured by your people is the highest honour you can get. Ray, being the humble person that he is, never demanded the (SAMA) award. (Ray is) my hero,” Gumede told channel24.
Phiri was delighted with the honour bestowed upon him and offered advice for musicians aiming to reach the top.
“I had the best opportunity ever… I was lucky to be born in this province. South Africa made me its son, I’m not bitter. If you want to be good, practice, practice, practice,” said Phiri after being honoured by Gumede.
