Iconic newsreader and much parodied wig wearer Riaan Cruywagen will soon release his tell-all biography.
Cruywagen, who was recently chosen in a poll as one of the most trusted figures in the country, has spent 37 years as an Afrikaans newsreader, and 47 years in the broadcasting industry.
Speaking to Die Burger, the legendary anchorman said his grandson had already emerged as the first critic of his writing.
“When my 4-year-old grandson heard I am writing a book, he asked very innocently: ‘Grandpa, why do you write a book? Why don’t you go and buy one?’,” said Cruywagen.
He said that public interest in his life story had motivated him to set it down on paper.
“Over the years, as one socialises around the fire or a dinner table, you start telling stories about broadcasting’s old days, things that are not as widely known. Then people ask ‘Why isn’t it written in a book?’”
After being approached by several interested publishers, Cruywagen opted to sell the rights to his book, Wat’s Nuus, to Johnny le Roux of Naledi.
The autobiography will be launched at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival and in local bookstores everywhere by April 2.
“(The book is about the) golden days of broadcasting” explains Cruywagen. “It was such a wonderful, nostalgic journey.”
In a statement, Le Roux said that the wig wearing newsreader will reveal the inside truth about the national broadcasting industry.
“Among other things, Riaan tells why he laughed so hysterically during a broadcast in the eighties, why he appears in music videos these days and sits in a jacuzzi with beautiful, half-naked girls.”
The publisher was referring to an ad for the 2011 Loerie Awards, which had Cruywagen as its star.
