A song by comedian Daniel Friedman, AKA Deep Fried Man, has been cleared by the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa after two DSTV viewers complained that it was racist.
Speaking to TimesLIVE, Spokeswoman for the BCCSA Shouneez Martin revealed that two complaints about the song, which focuses on typical local stereotypes, were received after it was shown on DSTV’s Comedy Central Channel, 122.
Both of the complainants accused the song of demeaning white people in a racist manner.
But commission chairman Professor Kobus Van Rooyen saw the funny side of the song, and opted to dismiss the complaints.
“To cry hate speech at the slightest provocation has the effect of cheapening the notion, and reducing its potency,” he said.
“It may no longer generate a response when the situation genuinely calls for it and when our social fabric is genuinely threatened by incitements to cause harm and utterances that really do promote violence.”
Is Deep Fried Man inciting hatered against his own race?
