Die Antwoord may have received a lot of flak from local audiences and critics following the release of their music video “I Fink U Freeky“, but they have remained strong and have now gained more fans in America.
They are now hot property in the States after appearing on the “Late Show with David Letterman” on Monday night.
Americans seem to relate more to their music, even though they don’t understand half the things they are singing – as most of their lyrics are in Afrikaans. Their ‘horrific’ music video can also be associated with some of Lady Gaga explicit videos.
Critic of popular culture Charl Blignaut told Timeslive: “It’s hard to say why they’ve become so popular internationally, but South African youth culture is dark and dirty and the rest of the world is starting to see it. We’re edgy and hardcore.
“Also, it’s artists’ job to get people speaking about our culture – so it’s fantastic.”
Blignaut added that he does not find Die Antwoord “shocking”, but rather “cheesy” and “repetitive”.
Die Antwoord’s performance on Letterman’s show will be broadcast on DStv’s Sony Entertainment Television channel next Tuesday night.
