Joost talks about his illness - Gallo ImagesFormer Springbok rugby star Joost van der Westhuizen recently received disheartening news about his health – he was given between two and five years to live after being diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease.

It is expected that his treatment will be expensive, and as a result, the South African Rugby Legends Association will be hosting a dinner to raise funds to help cover his medical costs and follow-up treatments in the United States.

Businesses are being invited to purchase tables to aid in raising money for the star. The organisation’s president Gavin Varajes told The New Age that he was counting on the naturally generous temperaments of South Africans to make the banquet a success.

He added, “I am very proud and honoured that we’ve enjoyed incredible support from the community and celebrities in their commitment to support Joost as he valiantly battles this dreadful illness.”

There is no known cure for the disease that Joost has been diagnosed with. The condition, which causes nerve cells to waste away, gets worse, and it soon becomes difficult or impossible to breathe without help when the muscles in the chest stop working.

  5. My heart goes out to Joost, Amore & his kids as something as severe as this has an effect on the whole family. I was one of Joost’s biggest fans & spoke to him at Newlands once. All he could talk about was that their son looked just as beautiful as Amore. God bless the V.d.Westhuizen family, especially Joost. I pray that the treatment heals him. God is a miracle worker, so who knows. All strength with you Amore. God bless!!!!

  11. I dont think anybody knows when somebody is going to die. Doctors are not God, this man has people that loves him and for the media to go out and publicise something so personal about somebody’s health. Personally its a disgrace to me. This man has children and for his family to read about it on the papers that he has so many years to live. I found that really insensitive. This is a sensitive issue.

Joost, is going to be fine, there is always silver lining in every cloud.

  12. May God give you strength and keep on praying!

  13. We pray to GOD to strenghten you REMEMBER nothing is imposible with GOD on your side. May GOD bless you and your kids. We love you Joos.
