After Die Antwoord claimed to have rejected a proposed tour with Lady Gaga, and dismissed the superstar’s music as “shitty pop”, fans of both acts have taken to Twitter to voice their views on the matter.
Some Tweeters seem to think Gaga would have a detrimental influence on the South African Zef group, while others think the band have passed up an excellent opportunity to expose their music to a wider audience.
Die Antwoord’s Ninja told MTV that the group wasted no time in rejecting Gaga’s invitation to join her on the Born This Way tour, which kicks off in Seoul, South Korea, in April.
Ninja and Yolandi Visser, the group’s principle members, were talking about the many strange things that have occurred since they achieved success, when they mentioned Gaga’s advances.
The tattooed frontman explained that Die Antwoord consider themselves to be on another level to the popstar, who is possibly the most popular singer in the world at present.
“Lady Gaga asked us to tour with her and we were like, um, no thanks,” said Ninja, who is currently on tour with the rap rave outfit in Australia.
Ninja added that were it Celine Deon who had made the proposal, that would have been a different story. He said the band had massive respect for the Canadian popstar.
Ninja also took a pop at the band’s former label, Interscope Records, saying that they parted ways because Interscope wanted to turn them into a “shitty” pop group in the mould of Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas.
Naturally, Twitter was soon abuzz with commentary concerning the revelations, with fans of Lady Gaga condemning the South Africans for rejecting their icon.
“Die Antwoord says no to tour with Lady Gaga, why? Because she’s not zef enough and doesn’t use the p-word in every second sentence?” tweeted one Lady Gaga fan.
“So Die Antwoord decline the offer to tour with Lady Gaga :/ ..IDIOTS!!” said another.
Fans of Die Antwoord soon struck back with vicious tweets of their own.
“Lady Gaga must feel dumb after Die Antwoord said no to her,” said one.
Cape Town-based tweeter @DiscordianKitty suggested that the news exposed Die Antwoord’s dumb white trash personas as being more authentic than was previously thought.
“Die Antwoord turns down touring with Lady Gaga. Are we REALLY convinced their stupidity is just an act?” tweeted the Capetonian.
Another user @AusiDineo said: “Let me get this right: Die Antwoord turned down Lady Gaga because her music (according to them) is weak, superficial sh*t?…self-hate much?”
