Organisers of the hit musical “Dreamgirls” had to cancel the show’s run in Cape Town because of poor ticket sales – even the show’s run in Johannesburg had to be cut short.
The show’s producer Hazel Feldman told TimesLive that they “could not even take the risk in Cape Town” after only five to 10 tickets to the show was sold on average a day.
The show apparently took three years to make it to South Africa, but now the millions of rands that have been spent on the production will never be made back. The outcome was never expected, as the show had excellent reviews, but it just did not become popular.
Only 50 000 people saw the show in Johannesburg, and despite top actors and actresses such as Aubrey Poo, Bjorn Blignaut and Lindiwe Bugane featureing in the cast, few people seemed interested.
What did you think would happen?
I doubt even 0.5% of the population appreciate the Arts, let alone have the concentration span to sit through anything.
I salute you for a brave venture. Take it to the U.K and make some moola back.
