Between presenting Expresso every weekday morning on SABC3 and working at 94.5 Kfm – Liezel van der Westhuizen still finds the time to train for marathons and be the Twitter Queen. We caught up with her to get a glimpse of her busy life.
What time do you wake up in the mornings?
03h30. I have four alarms – on my cellphone, alarm clock, blackberry notebook, and my watch. We’ve had people at work whose phones reset and they overslept, so I’m petrified of that happening to me!
What’s it like at Expresso?
I get to the show at about 04h15 – straight to make-up. We do a run-through of the show at 05h00, hair at 05h30 and a quick walk-through at 05h45. The show starts at 06h00 and then we’re on until 08h30.
And after the show?
It depends. If I’m filming for Expresso I’m there until 16h00 most days. Otherwise I do stand-in shifts at Kfm. I also write for a local paper, so I’m always busy. Getting up so early gives me more hours and I try and pack a lot into the day.
Between all of that, where do you fit in training?
It takes a lot of juggling but I always take at least an hour a day to train, usually in the afternoons. If I have time off after Expresso I’ll even go for a run or a cycle straight after the show. I fit in about two morning training session a week, and over the weekends I’ll go for a longer run or ride.
What are your weekends like?
I’ve got my show on Kfm on weekends. My first year in Cape Town I worked Expresso and weekend breakfast shows on Kfm – so I basically worked early mornings 7 days a week, with training afterwards. Now I’m doing weekend evenings at Kfm – and the rest of the weekend I’m training or doing some crazy sporting event.
Most people relax over weekends – when do you get to relax?
My schedule is so back to front and completely different. The other day I had a few hours off after Expresso and I explored Cape Town, and experienced the Wheel of Excellence. I spend time with my family when I can – and travel to see them. I also love to spend time on the beach. Something I’ve started since moving to Cape Town, because I’m so busy I’ll take a few minutes to eat something and go and have my own little picnic on the beach.
As Cosmo’s Twitter queen – how big are you on social media?
Because I don’t own a TV I find that my life revolves around social media. It keeps me up to date with what’s happening in the world. So first thing in the morning before I leave for work I check what’s happening, if there are any big breaking stories and retweet them. So I’m very big into social media, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest is my new big favourite. I also do the Social Media report on Expresso every Tuesday.
Anything exciting coming up?
This past weekend I was in KZN to commentate at the Comrades finish line, as only the second women to do it. And throughout the year I’ve got some sporting events – I’m always busy doing something crazy.
