Multi-award winning and internationally renowned musician Lira, says she is overwhelmed and eternally grateful for the love South Africans are showing her.
Speaking at her send-off ceremony at OR Tambo International Airport, which was hosted by MTN in honour of her nomination in the International act category at the Black Entertainment (BET) Awards, Lira became teary eyed when speaking of the love.
“The nomination by BET has affirmed that I have a lot of love in South Africa. People from all walks of life are rooting for me and wishing me well and showing me their love. That really humbles me,” said the songbird.
Lira will be joined at the awards by four MTN subscribers who won the ‘MTN Muziq BET Awards Competition’.
“Two weeks into the competition we found out that Lira was nominated for a BET award. We were ecstatic and decided to host this send off to show our support to Lira and also to congratulate the winners,” said Mapula Bodibe, General Manager: Consumer Marketing at MTN.
“I am so excited that I will have fellow South Africans in the audience when I am at the awards,” Lira said.
Metro FM DJ, T-Bo Touch will also be going to the BET awards and will be hosting the four winners.
On her nomination, Lira says it hasn’t sunk in yet. “The past few weeks have been really busy and so, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. I think when I am in LA that’s when it will sink in… even more so when I walk that same carpet that Beyoncé, Mary J Blige and other huge stars have walked. It’s still surreal for now, but it feels good.”
Lira will be rocking local designers for the awards events and main ceremony. “I am wearing Stoned Cherrie, 46664, Sylvester Falata and Errol Arendz shoes for all the BET events. I want to represent South Africa in everything I do.”
Lira will be in the US for a month. “I will use this opportunity to explore and strengthen my relationships and ties in the US,” she said. “I’ll also be promoting Mandela Day while I am there so it’s all very exciting.”
Lira’s global rise to fame has been extraordinary however, it’s safe to say that she hasn’t let the fame go to her head. Speaking of her success, the humble songstress reflects back to some words of wisdom given to her by Miriam Makeba that she believe have kept her grounded.
“The late Miriam Makeba gave me advice that I will forever hold true. She said, ‘Don’t try to change to suit the world. That is why I strive to remain genuine and my true African self in everything that I do,” she added with a smile.
The BET Awards will in Los Angeles on 1 July 2012.
