The first ever Global Spin Awards were held on the 19th of November in New York City. SA’s very own Deshnie Govender, aka DJ Roxxi, was nominated and won the award in the category for best International DJ/Africa. We caught up with Roxxi to find out how she’s feeling now…
So firstly, congratulations on your award!
Thank you very much! I was actually all set to head over to New York for the awards however; I had a contract for a corporate gig which I couldn’t back out of. At least winning made up for that! I was just so happy to be nominated and then when I heard about the win, it just blew me away. Everyone has been so supportive. It’s great to know that I have the support of my country behind me.
What went through your mind when you found out that you were nominated?
I really couldn’t believe it. We have some really big names here in Africa but when you narrow it down to female DJs, there are really so few of us. Lady Lea and DJ Zinhle have been doing amazing things and it’s important for people to know that for us it’s twice as hard to be successful! We don’t have the backing of a radio station – we are club DJs so we have to keep on pushing…
So since you missed the ceremony in New York, will the organisers be sending you your award?
Yes, it’s being couriered. Aside from winning the actual award, the international exposure has been great. I’m making some good contacts so far – which is especially great as I am headed to Miami in March for the Winter Music Conference.
Do you have any tips for aspiring female DJs?
Never give up! It may sound clichéd but the road can be tough. You need to have a firm belief in yourself and a love for music to get through it.
