Reports indicate that Premier League football giants Man United will take part in a 4-team tournament in South Africa in July, 2012.
No confirmation has thus far come from United, but an insider has told the Sowetan that representatives from the club were recently in the country discussing proposals for the tournament.
“United are excited to come back to South Africa because they have a big following,” said the source.
United last visited South Africa three years ago, to take part in the Vodacom Challenge, which they won after trouncing Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 in the final.
Should they return this year, they will kick off the tournament against AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on July 18, in a game that will coincide with celebrations to mark the 94th birthdayof Nelson Mandela.
Ghanaian club Asante Kotoko will also feature in the proposed tournament, which will reach its finale at Soccer City on July 21st.
“I think a deal with the fourth club – most likely from South Africa – will be signed in the next few days,” said the source.
Tournament organisers were not available for comment.
English Premier League club Newcastle United and DR Congo champions TP Mazembe will also be in the country in July, to take part in this year’s edition of the Vodacom Challenge.
