Mi Casa has become a household name quicker than you can say “Mzansi’s coolest new comers”.
After recently winning three South African Music Awards and releasing SA’s very first animated 3D music video, it’s safe to say that these musical geniuses have arrived.
Almost everyone we know loves at least one (or two, or three) songs by Mi Casa. They have won Mzansi’s heart over with their mesmerising lyrics and toe-tapping tunes. Mi Casa’s music speaks for itself and the only way to describe it is brilliant!
Mi Casa gave birth to triplets (3 SA Music Awards) about nine months after the group was formed. Where did the journey begin?
We met sometime in November 2010 at one of Soul Candi’s parties. They asked us to freestyle a song and, well, the rest is history. The first song we recorded was ‘The Man’ and soon after, we completed recording the whole album. I remember Dr Duda saying “If it doesn’t become a hit, then I’m quitting music” right after we finished recording ‘Heavenly Sent’ (laughs).
Describe yourselves using one word.
Mo-T: Talented
Dr Duda: Soulful
J’Something: Love
And Mi Casa using 10 words?
Entertainers, fun, clowns, down-to-earth, fresh, God fearing (all nod in agreement).
What is your favourite track on your album and why?
At the moment, it has to be ‘La Vida’. The reaction to it has been amazing. ‘Across the room’ is also one of our favourite tracks on the album.
Do you listen to your album?
Mo-T: I won’t lie; I listen to our album almost every day (laughs).
J’Something: Yes, we do. I actually don’t have the album; I need to get it soon! We’re a house band but surprisingly, you’re more likely to hear Jazz, Gospel or Hip Hop music playing in our cars.
Describe the moment when your name was announced at the SAMA. What was it like for you guys?
It was one of those moments where you forget about everything that is happening around you.
I heard that one of you guys cried – is that true?
(Everyone chuckles and points at a visibly embarrassed J’Something)
J’Something: Yeah, I mean, it was mixed feelings. We were all very happy, shocked, thankful and extremely humbled. It was really exciting. We had planned for Mo-T to play the trumpet if we got a second award but we got so excited that we forgot about it.
Do you think that you have achieved everything you’ve set out to achieve?
No! (All at the same time) We’ve done well, we’re extremely blessed but there’s still so much we want to achieve.
Where do you see Mi Casa in the near future?
Mo-T: Still making good music, stilling chilling with our people and still performing in the hood.
Dr Duda: On our third or maybe even fourth album.
J’Something: Yeah you never really know how long an album stays hot for, it depends on the singles you release and how people react to them. We’re hoping to release about two more singles from our debut album.
Now that we got all the serious stuff out of the way, it’s time to have a little fun. What are your biggest pet peeves?
J’Something: Negativity. People who are negative about things before they happen annoy me. Rather be positive and, if you mess up, move on. I hate washing dishes too, can’t stand it!
Dr Duda: Lies. Oh, and ironing. I can’t iron to save my life (laughs)
Mo-T: I hate lies too. I also don’t like twofaced people and gossipers.
Pick one: Rihanna or Beyoncé?
J’Something Beyoncé. I mean, I love ‘freaks’ but there’s a time and place for everything and Rihanna is bit too much sometimes.
Mo-T: Beyoncé (grins). She’s sexy, pretty, she’s got the voice, the talent, the….
J’Something: Well, clearly he’s into Beyoncé!
Mo-T: Yeah man, she has got it all!
Dr Duda: I’d definitely pick Rihanna. I like ‘freaks’ (laughs), I’m not afraid to get down and dirty.
What hidden talents do you guys have?
J’Something: In the bedroom? (Laughs) No, I’m kidding. I’m really good at playing FIFA and I’m a really good cook too.
Dr Duda: I’m a techno-freak, I love gadgets.
Mo-T: Uhm, I’m a good driver?
J’Something: I know something he lacks talent in, he’s a terrible cook.
Dr Duda: Yes, terrible! Don’t ever try and eat his food.
J’Something: He loves ironing clothes though.
Mo-T: (laughs) Oh come on! I enjoy ironing but that isn’t really a “talent”. I am a good navigator, you’ll never get lost when I’m around.
When it comes to love…are you guys taken?
J’something: I never know how to answer that question. Why do people want to know in the first place?
Mo-T: I keep my private life private.
Dr Duda: I also choose to keep my private life to myself.
J’Something: Yeah, besides, we just don’t have time for such anymore. We’ve been so busy with everything else that being in a relationship right now just won’t be a good idea.
Hmmm, interesting… Please round us off with Mi Casa’s ‘Pits’ and ‘Peaks’ thus far.
Pits: Disorganised shows and events really get to us. We once performed at an event where the sound was messed up, it really wasn’t cool.
Peaks: Every day is a peak for us. We love seeing people smiling and we aim to bring people of all colours together through our music. We’re very blessed and are just very grateful that we can witness that every day through interacting with our fan every day.
