Shocking stories of shootings, abuse and psychological intimidation in the family of local funnyman Trevor Noah have emerged in the High Court.

According to the City Press, Noah’s former stepfather, Ngisaveni Shingange, enacted physical, emotional and psychological abuse against the humorist’s mother, Nombuyiselo Noah.

The disturbing revelations are found in papers before the high court in Johannesburg, where Shingange has moved to have his divorce from Nombuyiselo Noah reversed.

In court papers, Nombuyiselo Noah (52), an estate agent, spoke of her dysfunctional relationship with her former husband.

They divorced in 1996, but remained living together in Highlands North, a suburb in Johannesburg. She said that in 2003, she and her 15-month-old son were driven from the house and forced to live in a back-yard shack on the property.

Nombuyiselo Noah says Trevor, unable to see his mother in such dire circumstances, ceased to visit their home at that point.

In the papers, she accuses Shingange of multiple offenses, including beating her with the frame of an old bicycle, slapping her repeatedly, chasing her down the street and destroying her furniture and personal effects.

The cruelty came to a violent climax when Nombuyiselo finally left Shingange in 2009. The enraged ex hunted her down at her home with current hubby Sfiso Khoza, and shot her in the back and face.

Her jaw was splintered, her skull punctured and her speech effected by trauma to both her nose and one ear. Shots were also apparently fired at Khoza, who she married in June of that year.

Nombuyiselo revealed that her youngest son, about seven at the time, begged his father to halt the violence, saying: “Daddy, please do not shoot mommy!”

According to the papers, when Trevor Noah contacted Shingange to protest the shooting, he found his former stepfather not only unrepentant, but hell-bent on more bloodshed.

“Shingange advised Trevor that he was also coming after Trevor to kill him”.

The popular comedian covered his mother’s medical bills following the attack. He insisted that his mother use a pseudonym at the time, fearing that Shingange might be looking to “finish the job”.

In responding papers, Shingange chose to ignore the shooting allegations.

“I have been advised not to comment at this stage since the matter is sub judice,” he said.

Nombuyiselo submitted papers two months after the attack, claiming that her ex-husband was circulating rumours in local newspapers, alleging that she was operating several slums out of illegally occupied buildings in inner-city Johannesburg.

Shingange says he only discovered that his wife had divorced him in October 2009, whereupon he immediately petitioned the court to reverse the process.

Trevor, who is currently based in Los Angeles, became the first South African to perform a stand-up routine on Jay Leno’s ‘The Tonight Show’ in January.

His agent, Gaenor Becker, said that her client would not provide any statements pertaining to his private life.

Shingange has been ordered to pay his ex-wife’s legal costs. His house will go under auction on Thursday, in a bid to raise the necessary funds.

Later this week, he will be sentenced in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court, after he was declared guilty of attempted murder.

Repeated attempts to contact Shingange through his lawyer, Lord Mataboge, proved fruitless.
