The legend that is Riaan Cruywagen has decided to call time on his career in front of the camera.

The 67-year-old, who looks as if he hasn’t aged since the 1970s, feels the time is right to stop and spend more time with his family after nearly 37 years in the industry.

After over 7,000 Afrikaans news bulletins, Cruywagen told Beeld: “This means that I couldn’t spend time with my family for at least 7,000 evenings, so I must say I’m looking forward to the evenings at home.”

Cruywagen is expected to retire on 26 November 2012, the day which will mark the 37th anniversary of his very first broadcast.

This news is likely to bring a tear to many a South African eye, as the stalwart of local television many grew up with will no longer be on our screens.
