Shortly after arriving home from his Jamaican holiday, rapper and self-proclaimed “Prince of S.A Hip Hop” AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, took to Twitter to express his disappointment about the SA Hip Hop Awards. The inaugural awards shindig takes place tonight at the Alexander Theatre in Jozi.
Apparently the awards committee failed to inform AKA’s camp that the awards’ voting lines would be closing on the same day AKA and his crew heard about their existence. “Wow. So SA Hip Hop awards voting lines close tonight. Thank you to the organizers for giving us the heads up. To my fans, please don’t waste your airtime voting for me as lines close tonight. Good luck to all other nominees. I will not be attending.”
It appears that the Jealousy hit-maker is still rather livid, as he has continued venting about how he feels about the turn of events for more than 24 hours. “I don’t understand how the SAMAs can give be a Best Male of the year award (sic), but my own industry can’t even involve me in the awards,” he said before adding that he will not be changing his mind about attending the ceremony.
“It’s a shame that I am forced to boycott my country’s first and only Hip Hop Awards. Despite this, I will continue to make my fans proud. The crazy thing about this whole saga is that 90% of you would never have known there was a SA Hip Hop Awards (sic) if I didn’t pull out. I’ve held the flag high for SA rap over the last two years. Me and my fans deserved a fair chance to be represented. ”
His anger clearly also stems from the fact that he wasn’t even asked to perform at the do. “I am deeply disappointed as I would have loved to be part of the plans for SA Hip Hop Awards. I haven’t even been asked to perform. How do the SAMA’s ask AKA to perform at their awards, but the SA Hip Hop Awards don’t? I would really have liked to be involved. When I heard about the SA Hip Hop Awards, I was excited. Now I feel disrespected. I’m not asking for much.”
Fellow rapper Tumi from Tumi and the Volume wasted no time in dismissing AKA’s tweets as unnecessary. “Pull your skirt up youngsta,” wrote Tumi. AKA was not to take Tumi’s comment lying down and responded; “C’maan boss. I would have liked to be involved at ANY level. I think I deserve at least that much.”
AKA’s buddies, comedian Loyiso Gola and TV personality, turned-business man, Sizwe Dhlomo, didn’t hesitate to show their support for the rap artist. “So Kanye can be arrogant but AKA can’t? Sanuk****nya (Don’t talk s***t),” tweeted Loyiso.
Well look at it this way, A.K.A – at least you received eight nominations and we’re sure you’re going to win some of them. As for the organisers of the SA Hip Hop Awards, we sincerely hope there is an explanation for this!
